A portion of green salad or a tempting bowl of fruits; think of all the food you eat in a day and all the scraps you throw away- the ones we just discard as peels. #EatingHealthy is definitely the latest trend but these super foods have so much more to offer. We often lose out on a good dose of nutrients and vitamins that can be extracted from the outer skin and peels. so, the next time you think of emptying out the trash, reconsider what exactly is wasteful and what can be made use of.

Broccoli stubs

Banana peels

The yummy, mushy part inside the banana is what we all relish and the peel is just tossed in the waste bin, isn’t it? Now this is exactly where we go wrong. The outer layer of the banana, which has brown speckles on it has been found to contain a good dosage of serotonin, which is known as the happy drug which boosts brain activity. That’s for your brain now let’s talk about your skin. The residue that comes from rubbing the inside of a banana peel makes an excellent face mask. The action of rubbing the skin has a gentle exfoliating effect, and as it dries, it draws out dirt and grease. The vitamins present in the peel also nourishes and hydrate the skin, leaving it looking fresher.

Apple skin

With the news of apples being coated with a thin layer of wax to make them look shiny; most of us have rejected the peel and gone for eating the fruit without it. But what most of us don’t know is that rich in fiber and Vitamin C, the skin actually has more benefits than the actual fruit. In fact, the skin can help in removing toxins from the digestive system and keep your gut clean. It may also interest you to know that according to the University of Illinois, nearly half of an apple’s vitamin C content lies beneath its skin. So, hunt for a healthy, non-waxy apple and eat it with skin as it has a lot to offer you.

Cucumber skins

Just like apple, skin of the cucumber contains more fiber and nutrients than the actual flesh part. The skin has been found to contain Vitamin K, which supports bone health and prevents the problem of blood clotting. Cucumber also has skincare benefits including vitamin C and caffeic acid, which both fight to reduce inflamed or irritated skin, and hydration thanks to its high water content. The peel itself contains silica, which firms up sagging skin.

Onion skins

I had done it all my life and i guess most of you still are doing this. We always peel off the outer layer of the onion and discard it, only to chop the onion bulb into small pieces, right? But when did we know that the onion skin, especially the red ones have a high dosage of essential quercetin which has anti-cancer properties and fights inflammation, keeping the heart healthy. The skin or the peels of onion contains antioxidants, flavonoids and anti-inflammatory compound that helps to deal with various health issues. The peels of the onion have more antioxidants than the onion itself.

So the next time you step forward to discard the peels in your waste-bin, think again.
