Nasty Stories of Some Mysterious Island

Island. What is the first thing that strikes your mind when you first hear this word? I’m sure most of you would be thinking of beautiful sandy beaches, corals, sea food, Pinacolatos and those windy mesmerizing sunset views. But what if I ask you to add another word to your Island dictionary? Mystery. 
Yes, you read it right. Amongst all the fancy and beautiful things associated with island, there also are some unsolved mysteries. So, let’s go on a trip to these Weird Islands.

The Land of No Return Island, Bersa-Kelmes

Located in central Asia, between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan is the biggest island of Aral Sea Bersa-Kelmes. While the name in itself is a tongue twister, the meaning is equally puzzling. Belsa-Kelmes literally means “the place of no-return”. There have been stories around where escapes who stayed at the island for a year returned home only to appear decades older, while some big groups of people are said to have disappeared from the island without leaving any trace behind. While the island now has been declared as the national boundary, after the shallowing of the Aral Sea, the mysteries around the same still floats high. 

The Snake Island, Brazil

Brazilllll… La La La La La Lala… 
OK. Sorry. Every time I hear the name Brazil, it’s was just this song that hits my mind instantly; hmmm! until I heard of the Snake Island. As the name very well explains, the island inhabits so many snakes where the species of the snake, occupying the island, have been classified as the most poisonous in the world.  Even executions are a rare thing here and only the expedition of Nat Geo was permitted here for the purpose of study and research. Stories around the snake bitten corpse of people found at the Island, who visited it being unaware of the danger, have been floating for years. The actual truth, however, still remains a mystery. 

Poveglia Island, Venice

What initially started off as the last refuge for more than 1.60 lakh patients during the Black Plague pandemic, later saw mental hospital constructed on it’s ground in 1920s. The Povenglia Island has been a hot spot of haunted stories and mysteries. It has been said that the patients at the hospital often complaint of a headache and feeling the presence spirits all around them. And if this wasn’t enough, the suicide of the head pediatrician, who was said to conduct some terrible experiments on the ill, added to the haunted stories of the island. While the hospital was closed post that, the island nowadays is apparently empty. 

Bouvel Island

Being a volcanic island with only 271 residents, Bouvel Island is the most remote inhabited island in the world, located 3,146,000 square miles away from the nearest land. While imagining the location in itself sends chills down our spine, the stories associated with it exaggerates the feeling. An expedition that visited the island in the later years of the 17^th century is said to have found an abandoned ship lying in the coastal waters. While the ship had no visible malfunction or an identity mark of the owner, it was surprising to see the paddles lying meters away from the vessel. While most of us might think that the sailor must have been smashed, yet no dead body or even a skeleton was found on the island. It may also interest you to know that the island has been affected twice by a nuclear exposure yet we still have no one (country) to take the claim for it. Just like the island, the exposures too have remained a mystery till date. 

The Island of Dolls, Mexico

I’m sure many of you must have heard of it; but if you haven’t, you’re in for a thrill ride dude. Located in the channels of Xochimilco, is the island of Julian Anderson, a farmer and the owner of the island. It has been said that a little girl drowned in the lake of the island, since when Julian Anderson hung several dolls throughout the island in order to please the soul of the little girl. Just as the story, the appearance of these dolls is equally horrifying where some have empty eye cavities and many have broken limbs. Julian Anderson, however, died in the 2001 of a heart-attack at the very spot where the girl drowned. 

Stories or reality, I really don’t know. So, I leave it to you to find the truth for yourself.
