Cleopatra, the last queen of Egypt & one of history’s most famous female rulers killed herself in 30 B.C., after being captured by Roman emperor Octavian. For over 2000 years, the tomb of Cleopatra has been the challenge for the archaeologists, desperate to find her tomb. While some Egyptologists still believe that Cleopatra and Mark Antony’s tomb is in Alexandria, it might not be an easy deal to find the same for Alexandria, now underwater, would require special equipment to look for it and no project is underway currently to make that underwater search a completion or a success. It is only fitting that the most alluring women of the history has managed to retain the mystery of her burial.
Great Blue Hole in Belize
The Great Blue Hole, giant marine sinkhole off the coast of Belize lies near the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll 70 km from the mainland and Belize City. Scuba drivers and snorkelers have been attracted towards the surface water for decades nut not many people have dared to venture deep under. While experts believe that the Great Blue Hole was once an island which got buried been under the sea due to the increasing level of water at the end of the last ice age when the glaciers melted, increasing the water level of the ocean. It is also believed that underneath there’s no oxygen & life resulting in a suffocating atmosphere. Whatever it might be, the sinkhole has been an unsolved mystery of the world.
The Great Pyramids of Egypt
One of the biggest unsolved mysteries of the world is the construction technique of The Great Pyramids of Egypt. Standing 481 ft high, the pyramids were the tallest structure in the world for more than 4,500 years before the modern technology turned the tables. The structure now stands 449.5 ft high, having lost 31 ft from the top during the course of time. But the mystery that still remains high is the technique the Egyptians used to move and lift 2 million limestone and granite blocks that are used to construct the pyramids. With no modern technology and cranes in those times, the construction technique of this wonder of the world a matter of discussion for the historians and archaeologist.
Being the fourth largest fresh water lake of the world, the Lake Michigan has much more than its size to talk about. It is the Bermuda Triangle of lakes also known as the Michigan Triangle. The triangle has been accounted for numerous mysterious events, beginning in 1891, where not just ships and air planes, but also humans have gone missing. Some claim to see the UFO above the lake and some to have discovered a series of stones 40 ft below its surface. Whatever the case might be, the mystery of Michigan Triangle still remains folded.
Plain of Jars
The mysterious Plain of Jars is an archeological site in Laos (Southeast Asia) where thousands of stone jars are scattered in Xiangkhoang Plateau. The cylindrical shaped jars have a lip rim to support a lid, and range from one to more than three meters in height, weighing up to 14 tons. While the function of the jars still remains debatable, some archeologist believes them to be the prehistoric mortuary vessels where the mortal remains of the decreased were kept to decompose followed by a crimination and burial of the skeleton remains. Whatever the truth might be, the site and the jars inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is definitely an attraction for the visitors.
